The AusPlay Survey (AusPlay) is a large scale national population tracking survey funded and led by the Australian Sports Commission that tracks Australian sport and physical recreation participation behaviours to help inform investment, policy and sport delivery. Various reports provide data on participation in sport and physical activity for persons with disability. Similar guidelines for children and youth in Canada have been adapted to provide examples of activity modifications, and details additional community resources that may be helpful to parents. While there are no formal guidelines for people with disability, the recommendations still recognise the importance of being as active as ability allows. The Australian Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines also provide recommendations outlining the minimum levels of physical activity required for health benefits at different ages. These recommendations recognised the benefits of physical activity for persons with disability, and were largely in line with recommendations for other population groups. In 2020 the World Health Organisation (WHO) released updated guidelines on physical activity and sedentary behaviour including, for the first time, recommendations for people living with chronic conditions or disability (pp.60-65). However, it also shows that many people with disability are interested in increasing their participation, if barriers are addressed. However, the benefits of being active remain as significant.Įvidence from Australia and internationally suggests that people with disability are often less likely to participate in sport and physical activity and to meet recommended physical activity guidelines, which can impact on physical, mental and social wellbeing. Sport and physical activity can be challenging for some people with disability due to mobility issues and/or lack of accessible and inclusive facilities and organisations. Participation in sport and physical activity generally varies significantly across an individual's life course.
